Our visitors always remark upon and
enjoy our delightful setting. We are fortunate to be located on the lower
slopes of Mount
Santubong, and
mountain breezes cool the house and its surroundings in the evening. The
mountain, covered in dense primary rainforest, also provides a spectacular
view to the rear of the house.
We are almost fully enclosed by primary jungle, and a wide variety of
rainforest birds can be seen and heard, with the occasional hornbill as a
bonus. Guests frequently see groups of monkeys in the adjacent rainforest,
and there are exotic lizards and butterflies in the garden.
The front of the house overlooks the South China sea, with panoramic views
of the ‘turtle islands’ – Pulau Satang Besar and Pulau
Satang Kecil – and the mountains of Southwest
Sarawak.
The overall effect is one of total
peace and seclusion, and a sense of intense privacy, further reinforced by
our limited room numbers.
The two things our guests love most of all are the house itself and our
wildly exotic garden. The house was designed by us as a place to enjoy the
tropical Sarawak climate, with plenty of
fresh air, open spaces and fascinating architectural details. It is
decorated with an eclectic mix of authentic Borneo
antiques and artifacts to give a very Sarawakian feel to the place. Our
amateur design efforts were obviously a success, as the house has been
featured in a number of design and style publications, including Malaysian
Tatler, Impiana, The Expat and various local newspapers.
The garden is a wild, ever changing profusion of indigenous and imported
plants offering an enormous variety of colours, shapes and textures. All of
the exquisite flower arrangements that you see around the house, created by
our multi-talented housekeepers, are gathered daily from our garden.
