Wallace’s Cottage
Wallace’s
Cottage is named for Sir Alfred Russel Wallace, the great British
naturalist. Co-discoverer (with Sir Charles Darwin) of the theories of
evolution and natural selection, Wallace did much of his ground-breaking
work right here in Damai, on the slopes of Mount Santubong.
The cottage may look like it has been perched on the edge of the rainforest
forever, with its weathered timber construction, but in fact it is the
newest addition to Nanga Damai. When the old Masonic lodge in Kuching was
demolished, we bought the building’s 100-year-old Borneo
ironwood timbers, doors and window frames, and commissioned a family of
Malay boat-builders to construct the cottage. The remaining timber was used
to build our pool deck and verandah extension.
Wallace’s Cottage features two rooms, each with two single beds, air‑conditioning,
and en-suite bathroom with shower and hot water. The entrance hall has a
shared fridge and seating area, and leads to a private verandah overlooking
a crystal clear jungle stream.
